5 Summer Solstice Rituals
The Summer Solstice is just days away and for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s a day to celebrate the Sun’s healing energies.
On this day the sun will ‘stand still’ and we will experience the longest day of the year. It is the start of Cancer season and our entrance into South Medicine.
It’s a day that’s long been considered magical and the veil between our worlds and the spirit world of nature are thin — making it easy for us to connect with our Earth Mother.
Research led by geobiologist, Rory Duff, says that the day before the Solstice the energetic ley lines of the Earth all align at the exact same frequency, creating waves of harmony, peace and healing throughout the planet.
These frequencies will help us to access a higher consciousness within ourselves and that of the Earth. So it is recommended that the days surrounding the Solstice is a perfect time for nature connection and ritual with the Sun.
Here are 5 Summer Solstice Rituals to awaken your connection at this time:
Harness the Sun, Tea or Water Infusion
Fill a glass container with distilled water and add to it 2 tea bags (green, black or herbal variety is fine). Add your desired fruit and herbs - ex. peaches, strawberries, rosemary, thyme, mint, lavender, or pear. Put the jar in the sunlight for 2-3 hours, lid screwed on. Once done, strain the solids from the jar and pour the liquid over ice and add extra fruit or herbs as garnish. You can add some honey to taste.
Water Blessing Altar
Some of our Ancestors would decorate wells, fountains, and birdbaths with flowers, greenery, and gemstones as a way of tapping into the energies of the Earth. If you have a space in nature where you live, consider making a Water Blessing Altar with plants, flowers, and items to connect you to the Earth’s life force energy. Sit in silence and listen — you just might receive some nuggets of wisdom.
Chase Away the Darkness Fire Ceremony
In some cultures, it is believed that evil spirits could be banished during the Summer Solstice. The sun could chase away any darkness, opening up the path for creating abundance and wealth. On the night of Solstice, create a fire ceremony — lighting your fire with intention to release and clear any energy that no longer serves you, negative thoughts you might be having and any behaviours you wish to change. Give an offering to the Spirit of Fire and once you feel tuned in to the energy of Fire, declare your wishes, dreams, burn things that you are ready to let go of, sing or dance around the fire. You can also take a moment to stare into the flames and ask Fire for a Summer Solstice message, listen and write it all down.
High Vibe Summer Feast
Nothing beats a high vibe fresh, seasonal and colourful feast! Cultures around the world often herald in seasons with feasts that celebrate the shifting of energies and Earth’s seasonal bounty. Gather fruits and veggies, make Summer teas and fruit-infused waters, decorate tables or outdoor spaces, lay out your feast, invite friends and family, and definitely have music! Celebrating with fresh organic, high vibe food, dance, music, and laughter will definitely connect you to the playful energies of the Summer season.
Sun Goddess Circle
There are many Goddesses we acknowledge and celebrate at this time and one I am particularly fond and connect to is the Goddess Rhiannon of Wales. All over the world, you can find dedications to the divine feminine. In Ireland, she was Etain, in France Epona, and more commonly, Pagan rituals recognize Litha as the Summer Solstice maiden. Explore your origin and discover the Goddess that heralded in Summer and honour a Goddess Circle to her. Make flower crowns, wear flowing garments, adorn yourself in Summer oils and vibrancy. Dance in a circle, drum with others, sing the songs of the Goddess. Welcome in her abundance of fertility, harvest, love and beauty.
Whatever you feel called to do to welcome in the beauty of Summer and the playful passion of South medicine, do it with lust, vitality, and a sense of curiosity that you can carry with you throughout this remarkable season.
